Days like today are exactly why there should ALWAYS be ice cream in this house.
Nothing particularly terrible happened around here, but the kids were especially trying and I have a lot to accomplish in the next week. Thus, the reason I wanted to sit back tonight, try to relax, and enjoy an ice cream treat.
But, we are out of any "good" ice cream (sorry, the kids' frozen fruit juice bars just aren't going to do in this situation). The freezer is sad, devoid of any mommy-appropriate indulgences. Really, is it too much to ask for a satisfactory supply of Magnum Double Caramel ice cream bars after a day like this?
Even more frustrating than a lack of guilty frozen pleasures? The fact that I do most of our grocery shopping and failed to recognize the urgency of a low supply. Ugh.
Eh, well, I'll scrounge around and find something to fulfill this craving, and then off to bed. Tomorrow is a new day, with fresh starts...and plenty of time to stop at the grocery store to refill the freezer.

Table for One
Another challenging day in the ol' duck pond.
Alex is really feeling the transition from the structured school routine into the less structured summer routine. Yes, we have a schedule for summer, but it's not as defined as his schedule during the school year, so it takes him weeks to adjust.
I wanted to take the kids back to the zoo today, but Alex didn't want to go anywhere because he thought it might rain (it was kind of cloudy). We compromised, and decided to visit the library and grab some ice cream before heading to his speech and occupational therapy appointments.
He loves the library, and who doesn't enjoy a good ice cream treat, so I thought we'd have a great afternoon. It was, for the most part, but my kids have learned the art of screwing around in the car, with the thought that Mom can't do anything about it because she's driving.
Ugh.
I can not stand to hear screaming kids in the car. It's nonsense. It's not safe. It makes me crazy. Yet they continue to do it. I've stopped the car, taken away privileges, yanked electronic devices out of their sticky little hands, but I have yet to find the magic solution to their minivan shenanigans.
So, imagine the headache I had when we finally got home this evening, after hearing them yell, laugh, scream, and fight in the car in between all of our destinations today. It was ridiculous. I escorted them inside, said hello to my husband, and then said goodbye as I walked out the door to go have dinner, by myself.
I had a lovely meal at Pei Wei, dining quietly and uninterrupted, and even read a couple chapters in a book that I'm really enjoying but have a hard time squeezing into my schedule. It was glorious.
And now, I'm back home, the headache down to a dull roar. The laundry needs some attention and the dishwasher needs unloaded, and I'm certain there is something I could be doing for Team Alex, but I'm going upstairs to take in another couple chapters of my book.
Here's hoping for a more peaceful Tuesday.

Ice Cream
I don't know if I've ever met anyone who does not enjoy some type of ice cream.
I was born in a smallish town, which had several family owned ice cream joints. We could walk down to the end of our street and get an ice cream cone out of an old caboose. It was awesome. After we moved to Columbus, we lost that piece of small town charm. We had a Dairy Queen right across the street from our first home, and that was cool (and it was before DQ went super corporate, so that location was more of a hybrid), but it wasn't the walk-up type of ice cream joint.
I still miss that.
Don't get me wrong; we have great options for ice cream here, so I'm not complaining. I love treats from Jeni's and Graeter's, as do my kids. But, sadly, neither one of those fine establishments has a Smurf cone. Ah, the Smurf cone; a childhood favorite. This concoction consisted of blue soft serve ice cream, a marshmallow hat, and candy eyes. Perfection on a cone.
Today, I saw several posts from Facebook friends that mention an ice cream place not terribly far from my house. It seems to have that element that I miss about my trips for ice cream as a child, and I'm very happy to hear that they have a Smurf cone. I am definitely excited to check it out.
Seriously, I might have just declared tomorrow as National Ice Cream for Lunch Day.

My Favorite Things
What is a blogger to do when she can't think of anything to write? (This especially applies to the crazy bloggers who challenge themselves to post every day for a year.) She posts another list, that's what.
And so, I give to you:
My Favorite Things
Favorite food: pizza (I mean, c'mon. It's absolutely the most perfect food.)
Favorite book: To Kill a Mockingbird
Favorite song: This is a tough one. I love music, and have an appreciation for all types. Just today, I was listening to this, this, and this; all similar, I suppose, thanks to my undying devotion to a local radio station (my kids rock out to the Ramones, Jake Bugg, and Alt-J because they have grown up with this station...way cool). There are really too many songs to consider, so I guess I will skip this one.
Favorite color: This is also a tough one. My favorite color to wear is black, and that's just because I think I look nice in it. I really can't choose just one color, so I'll steal Addie's answer to this question: rainbow.
Favorite tv show: Right now, we're back to watching Mad Men (hellooo, Don Draper!), and I also enjoy watching Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. (All I need now is for Brian Williams to get a Sunday night program and I could watch all my television boyfriends on the same night!) I have no problem admitting that I have a sick obsession with watching reruns of favorite sitcoms (Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Big Bang Theory).
Favorite ice cream: Hands down, a trio of Jeni's Salty Caramel, The Buckeye State, and Dark Chocolate. Perfection in a bowl.
Ok, I'm done with this. The more I write, the cheesier I feel, and I'm also realizing that I don't really have strong favorites of anything (well, except for maybe ice cream). Do you have any favorites that you feel compelled to share?
If nothing else, I posted something for today, therefore keeping my streak intact. Go me.

Contest
I swear, my children have a contest going to see which one of them can make my head explode first. Right now, I'm not certain who is winning.
They were out of school today (you know, because they haven't had enough time off this year), but since I had to work, I was only with them from about 2:15pm to now. We finally made it to bedtime, but not before they spent hours yelling at each other, tattling, fighting, and not listening to me. Seriously. It was a rough day.
Trying to put a more positive spin on our trying afternoon, I offered to take everyone out for ice cream after Alex's dance class this evening. When we got there, the drive-through line was really long, and the kids were beyond wound up in anticipation of said ice cream, which made for a very noisy wait (there was no way I was herding all three kids inside Dairy Queen...I'd rather contain the chaos in the car whenever I can). By the time we pulled away, my nerves were shot. So much so that I declared the ride home a "Mommy Time Out", and said that I needed a couple of minutes of quiet.
"Mommy! MOMmy! MOMMY!", was Andrew's immediate response.
My first thought? Are you freaking kidding me? It's been 12 seconds!! My calm reply? "Andrew, if you're not on fire or dying at this very moment, please wait two minutes before you talk to me."
"Mommy? What's dying? What does that mean? Why can't I talk to you? When are you going to eat your ice cream? How many days until the Easter egg hunt? Is Daddy going too?"
All I could do was shake my head. Fastest Mommy Time Out ever. EVER.
So now, as they get ready for bed, I will gather up my (mostly melted) ice cream and the book I just started, and go crawl into bed. Tomorrow is a new day. It may not be a quieter day, but it will indeed be a new one, full of opportunities to score points in their Make Mom's Head Explode contest.
